Gazing at Cherrydale Methodist Church, can you sense the echoes of history whispering through its walls? Cherrydale Methodist Church has stood as a beacon of faith and community since its humble beginnings in 1899. It all started not within these brick walls, but under the shade of a grove of oak trees. A simple Sunday afternoon bible class, led by Reverend Jesse W. Norris of the Potomac Circuit, marked the beginning of this vibrant congregation. The mission grew, moving from the oak grove to a tent, then to an empty store at 7 Lee Street. Imagine the devoted followers gathering in these makeshift spaces, their faith unwavering. By 1907, with the congregation expanding, a new home was needed. The first church building was constructed at the corner of North Monroe and 20th streets for a modest $993. Just a year later, in 1908, Cherrydale Methodist Church was formally organized with fourteen charter members, their names forever etched in the church’s history. The main sanctuary we see today, however, wasn’t erected until 1911, a testament to the church’s continued growth and the dedication of its members. This wasn’t the church’s final move. In 1952, a plot of land at the corner of Lorcom Lane and Nelly Custis Drive was purchased, paving the way for the Cherrydale Methodist Church we stand before today. Construction began in 1957, and by 1958, this new edifice opened its doors to the community. A remarkable 738 people attended the very first service, with ninety-two new members joining that day. Over the years, Cherrydale Methodist Church continued to evolve, adding a parsonage, a magnificent three-manual Wicks Pipe Organ, and even a beautiful stained-glass window. It also fostered community traditions like the beloved Living Nativity. Today, Cherrydale Methodist Church continues to be a hub of activity, a place of worship, and a symbol of enduring faith. It stands as a testament to the vision of those early worshippers under the oak trees, a testament to a community built on faith and fellowship.
