Stepping into the sanctuary of Igreja Presbiteriana do Brás is like stepping back in time. This church, nestled in the Belenzinho neighborhood of São Paulo, has a rich history intertwined with the growth of Presbyterianism in Brazil. Igreja Presbiteriana do Brás wasn’t always here on São Leopoldo street. Its story begins in 1910 on Rangel Pestana Avenue, under the guidance of ex-minister Antonio Miguel Pinto. The congregation, initially associated with the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, quickly outgrew its first rented room. Then, its second, then its third. The burgeoning congregation demonstrated the power of faith and community. It eventually led to its establishment as the Igreja Metodista Brás.

Igreja Presbiteriana do Brás, as it’s known today, took a decisive turn in 1912. Rev. Pinto, disagreeing with church governance, declared independence. He was joined by the congregation and several others. This bold move marked their transition to an independent path. This period was fraught with challenges. They faced financial hardship and leadership changes, even going eight months without a pastor. Yet, the congregation persevered. They held onto their faith. Visiting ministers and seminarians helped them during this time.

In 1914, after a period of uncertainty, the church found its footing. The congregation voted overwhelmingly to affiliate with the Presbyterian Church of Brazil. They officially became Igreja Presbiteriana do Brás on March 29, 1914. Their first pastor was Rev. Modesto Carvalhosa. He also served the Igreja Presbiteriana Unida. This marked a significant step in the church’s journey. Igreja Presbiteriana do Brás became part of the oldest and largest Presbyterian denomination in Brazil. They found a home within the Norte Paulistano Presbytery and Synod.

The church eventually moved from Rangel Pestana Avenue. Their journey took them to Celso Garcia Avenue, then to Dr. Almeida Lima Street, and finally to Brigadeiro Machado Street. At each location, they continued to grow. By 1914, they had 65 members and a thriving Sunday school with 73 students. They also maintained sound finances and a strong spiritual foundation. The dedication of early members like Manuel da Cunha, elected to the first church council, is a testament to their resilience. His daughter, Rute Cunha Sávio, remained a member of the church from its founding year until her passing in 2002. Her lifelong connection symbolizes the church’s enduring impact on its community.

Today, Igreja Presbiteriana do Brás stands on São Leopoldo Street. It continues its mission of spreading the Gospel and serving its community. They maintain an active schedule of services and programs. This location stands as a testament to the enduring faith. It reminds us of the dedication of those who built Igreja Presbiteriana do Brás from a small rented room. Igreja Presbiteriana do Brás embodies a spirit of perseverance, a dedication to community and an unwavering commitment to their faith.
