Have you ever seen a lake transform before your eyes? Welcome to Grüne See. This isn’t just any lake. It’s a magical place in Styria Austria a short drive from Vienna. In winter Grüne See is a small shallow area. It’s just a park really. But spring brings a breathtaking change. Snow melts in the Hochschwab Mountains. The meltwater flows down. It fills the basin below. The basin is the lake itself.

Grüne See isn’t always this way. During the winter months the water recedes. The area transforms into a county park. Paths appear. Benches are uncovered. But wait until May or June. Then the real magic begins. The water rises dramatically. It covers the paths. It hides the benches. It turns the park into an emerald green underwater wonderland.

The water is exceptionally clear. It’s an incredible turquoise green. Its color is due to snowmelt from the karst mountains. The temperature remains cool around 6-7 degrees Celsius. This chilly water keeps the flora relatively sparse. The rocky bottom is also a factor. However the fauna thrives. You can spot snails. Daphnia pulex or water fleas live here. Tiny crabs and fly larvae make their home in this unique environment. Various trout species also inhabit the lake.

Divers once explored Grüne See. They saw submerged meadows. They saw an underwater bridge. They even saw a submerged bench. Unfortunately to protect this delicate ecosystem all watersports are banned since 2016. The lake’s depth varies greatly. It reaches its maximum depth of about 12 meters from mid-May to June. It’s then that Grüne See is said to be at its most stunning. In July the water begins to recede again. The cycle continues year after year.

Grüne See is more than just a pretty place. It is a testament to the power of nature. Its seasonal transformation is truly mesmerizing. Visit Grüne See and witness this incredible spectacle. Remember this unique lake is precious and requires our protection. Let’s preserve its beauty for generations to come.
