Konnichiwa, friends! Have you ever heard of a charm so potent, it could cure any ailment? Here at the Miwasato Inari Shrine, also known as Konnyaku Inari, whispers of such a charm still echo through the grounds. Miwasato Inari Shrine, nestled in the heart of Sumida City, Tokyo, holds a fascinating history, deeply intertwined with the Konnyaku charm. The shrine’s origins date back to 1614. A priest from Dewa Sanzan shrine in present-day Yamagata prefecture was appointed the head priest of the Ooi village. He prayed to the Inari Okami deity from his home region for protection. Thus, Miwasato Inari Shrine was born. The name “Konnyaku Inari,” which translates to “Konjac Inari”, comes from a unique tradition. On the first day of the Horse in the month, the shrine distributes charms written on thin strips of konjac, a type of plant. These “Konnyaku charms,” boiled and consumed, are believed to offer protection against any illness. Even today, many visit Miwasato Inari Shrine seeking this unique blessing. The current shrine building, interestingly, was reconstructed in the Showa era, around 1958. Look closely at the architecture and you might just see echoes of both its past and present. The sight of families gathered, the scent of incense, the quiet rustle of prayer papers – Miwasato Inari Shrine offers a unique sensory experience. It’s a place where tradition meets modern Tokyo, offering a glimpse into the spiritual heart of Japan. Remember the Konnyaku charm, a testament to the enduring power of belief and tradition. Miwasato Inari Shrine invites you to experience a touch of ancient magic in modern-day Tokyo.
