First Baptist Church of Mount Rainier stands as a testament to community and devotion. But the story we are about to unfold actually starts in Washington D.C.. It involves presidents and a congregation’s journey through time.

Back in 1801 a small group of Baptists gathered in the U.S. Treasury Building. They sought fellowship and spiritual guidance. This humble beginning marked the genesis of what would become the First Baptist Church of the City of Washington D.C..

In March 1802 six laypeople and four ministers officially established the church. They initially met in a private home. Soon after they erected a meeting house. This building was located on the corner of 19th and I Streets NW.

The church grew steadily. In 1807 Rev Obadiah Bruen Brown became its first full-time pastor. His leadership would shape the church’s identity for decades. Brown was a man of many talents. He also served as chief clerk to Postmaster Generals. He was twice chaplain of the House of Representatives. He was also chaplain of the Senate.

First Baptist played a role in establishing Columbian College now George Washington University. Luther Rice a member of the church spearheaded this effort. He gained support from Obadiah Brown.

Over the years the congregation of First Baptist Church worshiped in five different buildings. These buildings were on four different sites in D.C.. One notable location was what later became Ford’s Theater. President Lincoln was assassinated there.

In 1890 the church relocated to its current location at 16th and O Streets NW. This placed it just one mile north of the White House. In 1955 the congregation replaced their building with a new sanctuary. The first service in this present sanctuary was held on Christmas Day.

Interestingly stones from other churches destroyed during World War II are part of this building. Stones came from Japan Berlin Hamburg and even Westminster Abbey.

First Baptist Church has a long history of notable attendees. Presidents Harry S Truman and Jimmy Carter both worshiped here. Truman appreciated the church’s welcoming atmosphere. Carter even joined the church during his presidency. He also taught Sunday school there.

First Baptist has always been a link between major national Baptist bodies. It partners with various fellowships and conventions.
