In the heart of Tokyo, the Prime Minister’s Residence, or Kantei, stands as a symbol of Japan’s political power. The Kantei isn’t just a single building. It’s a complex with a rich history, intertwined with the story of modern Japan. The current building, completed in 2002, is a five-story structure, significantly larger than its predecessor. It boasts solar panels and a rainwater storage system, reflecting Japan’s commitment to environmental consciousness. This modern Kantei replaced a much older building, which now serves as the Prime Minister’s personal residence, the Kotei. The original Kantei, completed in 1929, has a fascinating backstory. Its design, influenced by Art Deco and expressionist architecture, even bears traces of Frank Lloyd Wright’s style, particularly reminiscent of the Imperial Hotel. Prime Minister Tanaka Giichi, who commissioned the building, is said to have remarked, “This is just like a café, isn’t it?” upon first seeing it. This older Kantei, though smaller at 5,200 square meters, witnessed pivotal moments in Japanese history. The February 26 Incident of 1936, a failed coup d’état attempt, left the Kotei ravaged and unusable as a residence. It was later renovated and repurposed as office space. A substitute residence built in the South Garden met a tragic end during the air raids of 1945. The Kotei eventually returned to its residential role, hosting numerous Prime Ministers since 1968. The Prime Minister’s Residence is more than just walls and offices. It’s a living testament to Japan’s political journey, a stage for crucial decisions, and a symbol of the nation’s leadership.
