“Sueshige HIRAYAMA,” someone muttered. This name echoes through time here at Hirayama Sueshige Shrine. It whispers tales of a local hero. He significantly contributed to Hino City’s development. The shrine stands as a testament to his legacy.

Hirayama Sueshige was a busho. He was a Japanese military commander. He lived from the late Heian to early Kamakura period. Hirayama had an estate in Hirayama-go Village. This village was in Musashi Province.

During the Hogen Disturbance in 1156, Hirayama followed Minamoto no Yoshitomo. In the Heiji Disturbance of 1159, he fought bravely. He stood with Minamoto no Yoshihira against Taira no Shigemori. Hirayama led only seventeen horsemen against five hundred.

After Yoshitomo’s defeat, Hirayama lived as a local lord. When Minamoto no Yoritomo rose in 1180, Hirayama joined him. He fought in the Battle of Fuji-gawa River. He participated in the conquest of the Satake clan.

In 1184, Hirayama went to Kyoto. He searched for Minamoto no Yoshinaka with Minamoto no Yoshitsune. He fought in the Battle of Uji-gawa River. He also fought in the Battle of Ichinotani. Hirayama helped break through the Taira army. He seized victory with Naozane Kumagai.

After the war, Emperor Goshirakawa appointed him Uemon no jo. Yoritomo was outraged. He had not given prior consent. Yoritomo said Hirayama looked woolly-minded.

Around this time, Hirayama became jito. He managed the Harada no sho manor in Chikuzen Province.

In 1189, he fought in the Battle of Oshu with his son. He became Genro of the Kamakura bakufu. In 1192, he played a role in Minamoto no Sanetomo’s birth ritual.

Hirayama Sueshige seemed religious. He constructed Daihigan-ji Temple and Komiya-jinja Shrine. He also built Hozo-ji Temple after the Kamakura bakufu’s establishment.

Hirayama had a close relationship with Naozane Kumagai. They were rivals. He also connected with Minamoto no Yoshitsune. Yoshitsune appreciated his efficient personality.

Hirayama’s descendants survived the purge by the Hojo clan. During the Sengoku period, they followed the Gohojo clan. However, the Hirayama clan was destroyed in 1590.

Today, many claim to be Hirayama’s descendants in the Tama area. Hino City held a “Hirayama Sueshige Festa” in 2006. He is a local hero.

This shrine, sometimes called Himatsuri-jinja Shrine, honors Hirayama. Some believe he enshrined the Himatsuri family spirit here. It keeps his memory alive. Locals celebrate Hirayama Sueshige as a source of pride. The annual Hirayama Sueshige Festival is aimed at children. They don cardstock armor for a parade. The parade passes Soinji and Hirayama Sueshige’s grave.

Soinji Temple also houses Hirayama’s grave. It was moved here after Daifukuji Temple was abolished. The grave is a gorinto. It is a stone pagoda that represents the Five Elements.

Visiting this shrine is like stepping back in time. It connects us to a brave warrior. He helped shape Japan’s history.
