In 1908 a small group gathered for prayer. It was the humble beginning of St. Clair Avenue Baptist Church. These faithful members from Olivet Baptist Church along with Reverend John McIntosh met in a home on Wychwood Avenue. Their devotion sparked a Sunday school. Soon the dream of a church took root.
St. Clair Avenue Baptist Church wasn’t always on St. Clair Avenue. Initially it was called Wychwood Baptist Church. A temporary building was erected. A workshop at 12 Kenwood Avenue served as the first Sunday school. Imagine forty eager students and eight dedicated teachers crammed into that space. A true testament to faith.
The church thrived. A Women’s Mission Circle formed. Their dedication to missions shaped the church’s identity. In April 1919 the name changed to St. Clair Avenue Baptist Church reflecting its new location.
In November 1924 a significant milestone occurred. St. Clair Avenue Baptist Church moved to its current location. Dedication services followed on May 10 1925. This building stands as a testament to enduring faith and community.
Throughout its history St. Clair Avenue Baptist Church has been guided by devoted pastors. They carried the gospel’s message. They sought to serve their community. The church has maintained a strong Intercessory Prayer Team. They’ve also been involved in local missions. Partnerships with other churches have expanded their reach. They provide love and care to those in need.
Today St. Clair Avenue Baptist Church continues its mission. They are a caring family of God reaching out to all people. The church acknowledges its presence on the traditional territory of Indigenous peoples. The Toronto Purchase Treaty 13 is relevant to this land. This recognition reflects a commitment to understanding and reconciliation.
