A beacon of community nestled in North Toronto’s heart stands the Lawrence Park Community Church. Its story begins not with bricks and mortar but with the fervent desire of Lawrence Park residents. In 1943 a shared dream took root. The need for a church became undeniable. Many were Anglican and United Church members. Discussions flourished. Approaching both denominations proved crucial. When the Anglican Church declined their request Lawrence Park Community Church (LPCC) found its home within the United Church of Canada.
The year 1945 marked a pivotal moment. The current site at the corner of Bayview and Lawrence Avenues was chosen. This location would become the heart of the community for generations. On September 14 1952 the first service echoed through the new sanctuary. By 1955 construction concluded. The organ loft and Moller organ completed the magnificent building.
For 37 years Reverend Douglas E. Bradford served as minister. He fostered a close-knit community a legacy that still resonates today among long-time parishioners. From its inception LPCC demonstrated a profound commitment to social justice. Early on they engaged the community in dialogues. They strived to become a more inclusive part of Toronto. The church actively supported Out of the Cold a program providing housing and meals to the city’s less fortunate. Numerous refugee families from Vietnam the Congo and Syria found refuge and support within their welcoming walls.
The church became more than a place of worship. It was a hub for diverse community groups. Weight Watchers Tai Chi Cub and Brownie troops and musical ensembles all found a home within its walls. From 2006 to 2008 extensive renovations transformed LPCC into a modern community-friendly space. New audio-visual technology and eco-friendly heating systems were installed. Accessibility for all was prioritized. The renovation included multi-use spaces. The Sanctuary’s design maximized natural light creating a relaxed atmosphere. A new Cassavant organ a generous donation from the Florence Grand estate became a centerpiece. Other donations funded a new kitchen sound systems and a library. Plaques throughout the church honor these generous donors. The Bradford Room a tribute to Reverend Bradford stands as a repository of LPCC’s history.
In 2012 Reverend Dr John Suk became the new minister. Reverend Stephen Milton joined in 2019 as co-minister. The pandemic of 2020 shifted services online. Regular offerings were adapted for digital platforms. Reverend Suk retired in 2021. Reverend Milton became the lead minister. In-person services resumed in May of that year with continued live streaming. In February 2022 Reverend Roberta Howey joined as Young Adults Minister. Her work expanded programming and pastoral care for young adults. This ministry became a permanent part-time position. Reverend Dr Eric Bacon returned as pastoral care minister in 2022 providing support to older members and officiating at weddings and funerals. The Lawrence Park Community Church continues to be a vibrant place of worship and a cornerstone of the community.
