Ever since its beginnings Warsaw-Babice Airport has witnessed history unfold. From its humble start as a landing strip during World War I to its current status. In 1918 the Research Institute of Aviation Technology was established there. This institute later transformed into the Technical Institute of Aviation. Following World War II Warsaw-Babice Airport was re-established in the Szwedzkie Górki area. This is situated between Fort P and Boernerowo. The name comes from its location in the Gmina Blizne municipality near Old Babice.
The airport’s long concrete runway only represents part of a much larger runway from the former military airfield. Imagine the sheer scale of the original runways. They measured 2000m x 80m and 2500m x 90m. One was even incorporated into Powstańców Śląskich Street. That’s impressive historical integration!

Today the airport is administered by the Centre for Logistics Warsaw-Babice. The Warsaw Aero Club and Polish Air Rescue also operate there. Due to its location in a heavily urbanized area unique traffic procedures are used. This is the only solution of its kind in all of Poland. This unique situation has caused some conflict between the airport and its local neighbors. The unique needs of the airport continue to shape life in Bemowo. It is a fascinating blend of history and modern challenges.
