Could this unassuming building really be a chapel? We’re standing before Hässelby kapell. It might not have the grandeur of a cathedral. But don’t let its simple façade fool you. Hässelby kapell holds a unique place in the heart of this community. The chapel you see today is actually a repurposed space. It was originally part of a family hotel built in the 1950s. This building housed Hässelby’s first dedicated chapel. It served as a spiritual center for a rapidly growing suburban population. Interestingly, even back then, people debated if it truly felt like a church. Many still preferred the more traditional Hässelby villastads kyrka for important ceremonies. Over time, as attendance dwindled, Hässelby kapell transformed. It became a community center, then a social cafe called “Oasen”, offering a haven for the elderly and lonely. Today, it serves a different purpose, now a preschool echoing with children’s laughter. The echoes of hymns and prayers may have faded. But the spirit of community, of service, and of transformation continues to resonate within these walls.
