Beneath the shadow of towering skyscrapers rests Seishoji Temple. This tranquil oasis offers a glimpse into a rich history. Seishoji, a Soto Zen temple, sits nestled near the bustling streets of Tokyo. It was founded in the Bunmei era and later relocated to its current location in the Keicho era. Its modern buildings blend seamlessly with traditional elements, creating a unique atmosphere. Seishoji offers free zazen, seated meditation, welcoming both locals and foreigners alike. Within the temple grounds lies a cemetery on elevated ground leading to Mount Atago. Here you’ll find the unique grave of the Pike Bearer, Ashida Yoshikatsu. This loyal footsoldier served Nobutomi Matsudaira. Legend says, to prevent harming others with his long pike, he shortened it. This act tragically led to his own disembowelment. His grave, also known as the Yakko Jizo, is believed to offer healing for certain ailments. Visitors leave bamboo containers filled with alcohol as offerings of gratitude. Seishoji also houses other historical treasures, including the grave of Kinga Inoue, a renowned Confucianist, a Hourindai Kannon statue, a peaceful bamboo grove, and a hidden freshwater spring. Seishoji Temple invites you to experience its serene beauty and discover its captivating stories.
