Gazing up at Grassy Hill, have you ever wondered about the secrets hidden within Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve? Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve, once a barren landscape, has been transformed into a lush haven. This 460-hectare reserve, nestled between Shatin and Tai Po, boasts a remarkable comeback story. In the early 20th century, much of the area was deforested. But in 1926, a government-led afforestation project began. Initially, the focus was on planting pine trees, earning Tai Po Kau the local nickname “Tsung Tsai Yuen,” meaning Pine Garden. Later, other species like Taiwan acacia, paperbark, camphor, and Brisbane box were introduced.

Over time, native trees like sweet gum and fragrant litsea began to reclaim their place. Today, Tai Po Kau stands as a testament to nature’s resilience, a vibrant mix of over 100 tree species. This rich tapestry of flora supports an equally diverse fauna. Birdwatchers flock to Tai Po Kau, drawn by the chance to spot over 160 bird species. Keep an eye out for the crested bulbul, chestnut-winged cuckoo, or the elusive collared scops owl. The reserve is also a haven for butterfly enthusiasts, with over 100 species flitting through the foliage.

Tai Po Kau’s streams and rivers teem with life. More than 50 dragonfly species patrol the waterways. The reserve also holds a hidden secret for herpetology lovers. It’s renowned for its snake diversity. While hiking the trails, you might hear the rustling of barking deer or, if you’re incredibly lucky, catch a glimpse of the rare Chinese pangolin or masked palm civet. For those seeking a closer look at nature’s wonders, Tai Po Kau offers five way-marked walks. Four color-coded walks range from a gentle 3-kilometer stroll to a more challenging 10-kilometer trek. There’s also a shorter Nature Trail, about one kilometer long, perfect for a leisurely exploration of the subtropical forest.

As you wander through Tai Po Kau, imagine the South China tigers that once roamed these hills. Their presence, though now only a memory, adds another layer of intrigue to this remarkable reserve. Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve is more than just a collection of trees; it’s a living testament to the power of nature’s recovery and a vibrant ecosystem teeming with life.
