Graffiti as a tool for those with almost nothing. That’s how Banksy sees it. Right here in Toronto, we have a tangible piece of that philosophy.
The Banksy Street Art Mural at Church and The Esplanade offers a glimpse into the mind of one of the world’s most elusive and thought-provoking artists. Banksy, who remains anonymous, began his career in the 1980s in Bristol, England. His works combine dark humor with political and social commentary.
This particular Banksy Street Art Mural appeared during a brief visit to Toronto in 2010. Banksy was promoting his documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop. Initially, there were seven Banksy artworks in Toronto. Today, only this one remains visible in its original location.

The Art of Banksy exhibit made its North American debut in Toronto in 2018. Steve Lazarides, Banksy’s former agent, curated the exhibit. However, Banksy himself did not approve the exhibit. Banksy has distanced himself from commercial galleries.

One of Banksy’s most famous works is “Girl With Balloon.” It first appeared on Waterloo Bridge in London. The image shows a girl reaching for a red heart-shaped balloon. It is a symbol of childhood innocence and lost hope.
Another iconic work is “Love Is In The Air,” or “Flower Thrower.” It first appeared in Jerusalem on the West Bank Wall. The wall separates Palestine from Israel. Banksy called it “the world’s largest open prison.”
