Across the Sumida River from Asakusa lies Mukojima a hidden gem of Tokyo. This northeastern district in Sumida ward boasts a rich history. It thrived as an industrial and entertainment hub during the Meiji period. Land prices were lower than on the west side of the river. This attracted businesses like Seiko. The Seiko Museum showcases the company’s watch and clock production. Mukojima also retains a unique geisha district one of the few left in Tokyo. Ryotei restaurants along Kenban-dori still host geisha performances.

Despite damage from the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake and World War II bombings Mukojima largely escaped unscathed. The area retains some pre-war Showa period atmosphere. You can see this in the Shitamachi Ninjo Kirakira Tachibana Shotengai and Hatonomachi Dori Shotengai shopping streets. These streets offer a glimpse into the past. They display the resilience of the community.

Mukojima Hyakkaen a historical strolling garden is another highlight. It’s over a century old. It’s closely linked to art and literature. Visit the garden for stunning plum blossoms in February and March. Enjoy the beautiful hydrangeas during June and July. The Tobu Museum of Transport and Culture is near Higashi-Mukojima Station. It features twelve historic Tobu trains and buses. These include the company’s first steam locomotive electric train and electric locomotive. Staff present shows of the steam locomotive and model railway.

Near the Sumida River in Sumida Park Ushijima Shrine is popular with newlyweds. People with ailments visit to touch the nade-ushi cow statue. Then they touch the affected body part for healing. The three-story Sumida Heritage Museum is nearby. It explains the area’s history through dioramas and interactive displays. A moving exhibition showcases photographs of the devastating Tokyo air raids.

Several shrines and temples along the river are dedicated to the Sumida River Seven Gods of Fortune. These include Mimeguri Shrine Kofukuji Temple and Chomeiji Temple. Mimeguri Shrine has a unique lion statue. Mitsukoshi department store in Ikebukuro donated it when the store closed in 2009. Mukojima is easily accessible via Higashi-Mukojima Station on the Tobu Skytree Line. This station is convenient for the museums and Hyakkaen Gardens. Ushijima Shrine and the Sumida Heritage Museum are closer to Tokyo Skytree Station. Both stations are reachable from Asakusa Station.
