Hidden within the southwest slope of Monte Stena lies the Grotta Gualtiero Savi. This isn’t just any cave. It’s a treasure trove of wonders a subterranean marvel. Named after Gualtiero Savi the son of one of its early explorers this cave in the Val Rosandra natural reserve near the Slovenian border is a testament to nature’s artistry.

The approach itself is breathtaking. Imagine the panoramic views overlooking the peaks. Urbanization is almost entirely absent. For those accustomed to bustling cityscapes this peaceful setting is a welcome sight. The Grotta Gualtiero Savi offers a unique escape.

The cave’s path is mostly sub-horizontal. In places ladders ropes and rungs aid navigation even without specialized equipment. The sheer abundance of formations is astonishing. Every inch is covered in concretions. Stalactites stalagmites flowstone and more. After a while the sheer volume of formations is almost overwhelming. It’s a sensory overload a feast for the eyes.

The expert photographer Damiano focused on macro photography capturing the intricate details. He expertly found hidden treasures in narrow crevices. Large flowstones are also spectacular. But the cave holds even more surprises. Have you seen black and orange carrot-shaped formations? Or the eccentric formations? Crystallized surfaces in small pools? And the cauliflower-like formations? Simona’s video recordings captured the beauty. I personally found myself marveling at every turn. Sandro even took on the unusual role of light-man.

We also explored the Galleria Bianca a smaller branch. It’s about a meter high narrowing towards the end. This passage is filled with stalactites stalagmites flowstone crystallizations and eccentric formations. A near-horizontal flow has ‘flooded’ the gallery. The tips of some stalactites appear ‘dipped’ into the floor.

Emerging from the cave after a few hours the outside air was surprisingly sharp. There was a shift in scents a subtle change in atmosphere. The fresh sweet fragrance of irises blooming abundantly filled the air. It’s a sensory experience you’ll not soon forget. The Grotta Gualtiero Savi is truly a place of wonder. A special thank you is extended to the Boegan Grotto Association of Trieste for allowing us access to this incredible cave.
