Hidden within a residential building in Vienna’s 9th district stands the Evang. Messiaskapelle. This unassuming chapel holds a rich and surprising history. It’s more than just a place of worship. It’s a testament to resilience faith and unexpected transformations.

The Evang. Messiaskapelle’s story begins not with church bells but with a school. In March 1922 the building was acquired by the Swedish Israel Mission. It had been built earlier as a school for poor Jewish girls. A Jewish architect Ludwig Schmidl designed it. A small plaque and a cross inside the chapel quietly commemorate this. The building served a vital purpose during the war years. The Swedish Israel Mission helped persecuted Jews escape.

Later the Swedish Mission ended its work in Vienna. The building was purchased by the Evangelical Church. In 1961 the Evang. Messiaskapelle became an independent preaching station. A significant renovation took place in 1964. Only the altar piece a copy of an unknown 17th-century painting remains from the original interior. The chapel now boasts a simple modern design.

In 1999 a pivotal moment arrived. The Evang. Messiaskapelle officially became the independent Evangelical Church of Vienna Alsergrund. It’s the 22nd parish of the Viennese Superintendency. The community actively participates in the Long Night of Churches. The Bachgemeinde Wien choir also rehearses there.

So the Evang. Messiaskapelle stands not just as a place of prayer. It’s a living testament to a building’s journey. It reflects changing communities shifting religious landscapes. It’s a symbol of survival hope and the enduring power of faith. Its unassuming exterior hides a remarkable history a history worth exploring. Take a moment to reflect on this remarkable space. Let the Evang. Messiaskapelle’s quiet strength resonate with you.
