Houisons Cottage is more than just a beautiful building. It’s a silent witness to a fascinating chapter of Parramatta’s history. He also designed Kia Ora his own family home Houisons Cottage.

One Wednesday night in 1844 a strange event unfolded within its walls. While the Houison children slept and Mrs Houison rested. A mysterious he-creature was spotted ascending the unique semicircular staircase. Mrs Houison was understandably alarmed. The creature quickly retreated leaving behind only a pair of boots and a bottle of wine.

News of this unusual visitor spread quickly. It turned out the incident occurred on Valentine’s Day. A convict maid living in the attic was suspected of involvement. A romantic tryst was suggested although the maid vehemently denied the accusations. She was eventually sentenced to two months in the Parramatta Female Factory.
