“Every person made new in Christ.” This phrase encapsulates the very essence of Oceanside Anglican. Formerly known as St Mark’s, Oceanside Anglican has a rich history. It started in 1908. The church stands today as a consolidation of six churches.

The culture, people, and assets of each have combined. They produce a well-resourced church. This church has strong disciples. They are eager to grow in God’s grace. They want to share that with others. Oceanside Anglican is an evangelical Christian church. It is located in Sydney’s eastern suburbs. Its mission is clear. It aims to see “Every person made new in Christ, mature in Christ, making Christ known.”

In early 2021, Reverend Gavin Poole arrived as the Senior Minister. This ushered in a new era for Oceanside. He is passionate. He wants to help his church be good stewards of its assets. These assets have been passed down through generations. They are not only a blessing to them but also to the wider Diocese.

Reverend Poole and his team created a strategic plan called ‘New Directions’. This plan focuses on expansion. It moves from relying on the growth of the six churches. It expands their ministry intentionally. It reaches into the seven surrounding suburbs.

Oceanside Anglican is making its building more welcoming. Currently, the church building lacks a clear entryway. It also has inadequate accessibility for people with disabilities. Oceanside Anglican will construct a new roofed entry foyer. It will improve amenities with accessible parking. There will be an accessible path. They will create shared access to the courtyard and church building. Air conditioning will be installed in the main hall. There will be a new accessible toilet. Internal alterations will make a more functional auditorium and office space. An existing porch will be enclosed. This will make it safer. A new roof structure will be built. The rear terrace will be extended with new doors.

The parish that Oceanside Anglican ministers to stretches from Long Bay to Botany Bay. It encompasses about seven suburbs. It ministers to a population of around 30000 people. Interestingly, the biggest religious affiliation is Catholic. It’s at 31%. The average across Australia is close to 20%. This means that Oceanside really has to consider how the gospel is presented to its neighbours. The church changed its name to Oceanside Anglican from St Mark’s. This reflects the area it reaches into. It removes religious distractions to the gospel.

Oceanside Anglican holds three services each Sunday. About 140 people attend. There is an 8:30 am liturgical traditional service. A 10:30 am family service is offered. A 5 pm service is available “for the young at heart.” Everyone is welcome at Oceanside Anglican. You’ll find a community of diverse people. They come from many countries. They are at different stages in their relationship with God. Some are exploring their beliefs. Some are new followers of Christ. Others have known Christ for decades. From newborns to seniors, there are groups and activities for all ages.
