Remember that time in Hong Kong? Fenwick Pier. The name itself conjures images doesn’t it?

Fenwick Pier wasn’t just a pier. It was a lifeline a sanctuary for sailors from around the globe. For nearly 70 years this unassuming Wan Chai landmark served as a welcoming haven. It was a vital hub for countless military personnel primarily US Navy sailors. They came seeking respite after long voyages. Fenwick Pier offered much more than just a place to dock.

Imagine stepping onto Fenwick Pier in its heyday. You would have found a bustling community. The Servicemen’s Guides Association a non-profit organization managed the pier since 1953. They provided invaluable services. Free SIM cards free guidebooks and even transportation shuttles were available. The pier even had an information booth staffed with people who could speak numerous languages. The pier ensured worry-free stays for visitors.

The pier itself evolved over time. Typhoons Wanda and Ruby caused significant damage in 1962 and 1964. The pier was rebuilt in 1965. Later in 1970 a new building opened. It included everything a sailor could need: a restaurant a money exchange and even billiard tables. By 1974 an extension was added providing even more space for sailors to relax. A four-story Fleet Arcade opened in 1994 offering shops and recreational facilities.

But the story of Fenwick Pier isn’t just about the buildings. It’s about the people. Thousands upon thousands of sailors passed through its doors. They created memories friendships and shared experiences. They found comfort and camaraderie in this unique space.

The pier’s fate changed in the late 1990s and 2000s. The number of visiting vessels decreased. Land reclamation in 2016 effectively landlocked the pier. The government notified the SGA in 2020 that the lease would not be renewed. Fenwick Pier closed for good in February 2022. A new fire station now stands where this piece of Hong Kong’s maritime history once thrived. Yet its legacy the stories of sailors who found solace and connection live on. Fenwick Pier may be gone but its spirit remains.
