Established in 1857, Karori Normal School has witnessed generations of Wellingtonians pass through its halls. It’s not just any school. It’s the second-largest full primary school in all of New Zealand. Imagine the energy of almost 700 students, from Year 1 to 8, filling the classrooms and playgrounds of Karori Normal School. This school boasts an impressive 35 classrooms, spread across four buildings. Beyond the traditional classrooms, Karori Normal School offers its students a variety of spaces to learn and play. There’s an artificial turf field for sports, two playgrounds for younger children, a concrete field, and a grassy expanse. Karori Normal School is deeply connected to the literary history of Wellington. The famous author Katherine Mansfield was a student here from 1895 to 1898. Her presence is still felt on the grounds. A memorial to her stands on a concrete field, aptly named the Katherine Mansfield field. This field is especially significant because it sits in front of a tree that Mansfield herself wrote about in one of her stories. The school is located on Donald Street, in the heart of Wellington. In 2024, the principal was Caro Wills, guiding the school’s mission to provide a quality education to its diverse student body. If you were to visit today, you might hear the echoes of children playing, learning, and growing, much like Katherine Mansfield did over a century ago.
