The bell rings. A familiar sound echoing through the years. This is the Realschule Ditzingen. Its story begins not with bricks and mortar but with a need.
In the early 1960s Ditzingen’s schools were overflowing. Neighboring towns wouldn’t accept Ditzingen’s students anymore. Otto Fingerle the rector of Ditzingen’s Volksschule saw the problem. He proposed a solution: a new Mittelschule. The idea gained traction. In 1964 the first students were taught in a Mittelschulzug a new section added to the Wilhelmschule.
This wasn’t just an expansion. It was the seed of something bigger. It was the beginning of the Realschule Ditzingen as we know it. Otto Fingerle steered this initial growth until his retirement in 1968. Then the school found its own space. It moved into the Wilhelmschule building.
But the journey wasn’t over. The initial plan for a new building near the Konrad-Kocher-Schule fell through. The noise of the A81 Autobahn was too disruptive. The solution came in the form of a new Schulzentrum a school center in the Glemsaue. An architectural competition decided the winning design. The Realschule Ditzingen along with the Gymnasium moved into their new shared home in 1975. The Gymnasium followed in 1978 and the final phase was completed in 1984.
The student population soared to 750 in the 1980s. Then it declined in the following decade. In 1992 the school officially became known as the Realschule in der Glemsaue reflecting its new location and its mature status. The school now serves primarily Ditzingen and its surrounding areas.
Today the Realschule Ditzingen stands strong. It is more than just a school. It’s a testament to vision dedication and community effort. It’s a place where generations of students have learned grown and made their mark. It’s a vital part of the Ditzingen community. It’s a living legacy.
