Why this massive glass facade for a sports hall? We are standing in front of Sporthalle Hardau, a relatively new addition to Zurich’s architectural landscape. Completed in 2007, the Sporthalle Hardau isn’t just a place for athletes to train and compete. It’s a symbol of urban renewal, a beacon of light in the heart of Zurich’s Aussersihl district. Back in the late 1990s, the city council decided to breathe new life into Aussersihl. The Sporthalle Hardau was a key part of this plan, a way to create a vibrant public space and foster a sense of community. The design, with its transparent facade, was a deliberate choice, a way to connect the energy inside with the lifeblood of the neighborhood. Inside, the Sporthalle Hardau is a hive of activity. The three-court gymnasium can accommodate a roaring crowd of 1300 spectators. It’s primarily the home turf of GC Unihockey, one of Switzerland’s top floorball teams. But the Sporthalle Hardau has also hosted a variety of other events, from basketball tournaments to dance competitions. The Sporthalle Hardau stands as a testament to Zurich’s commitment to both sports and urban revitalization. It’s a place where people come together to compete, to celebrate, and to be a part of something larger than themselves.
