“Terra do Pêssego,” whispered the wind, rustling through the leaves of the trees here in Distrito José Bonifácio. This district in São Paulo’s eastern zone holds a history as sweet and complex as the peaches that once thrived here. Distrito José Bonifácio wasn’t always a bustling urban landscape. In the 1920s, Japanese immigrants arrived, transforming the area into a flourishing peach and plum orchard. This earned the area the nickname “Terra do Pêssego” (Peach Land), a name that still echoes in the nearby Jacu Pêssego Highway. The immigrants’ impact is more than just agricultural. In 1927, they founded the Associação de Moços da Colônia de Itaquera, now known as the Itaquera Nikkei Clube, a testament to their enduring legacy. Remnants of this era still stand. Scattered throughout Distrito José Bonifácio, you might spot old farmhouses, some preserved, others repurposed as factories, homes, or clubs. One such place is the Associação Pró-Excepcionais Kodomo no Sono, another reminder of the Japanese community’s influence. A major shift came with the construction of the Conjunto Habitacional José Bonifácio, a large housing complex funded by the Banco Nacional da Habitação and inaugurated by President João Figueiredo. This project brought an influx of lower-income residents, dramatically changing the district’s demographics. They found buildings and paved roads but lacked basic sanitation, social amenities, public lighting, and even public transport. The community, however, didn’t stand still. Through persistent organizing, they achieved significant improvements. Schools, health centers, daycare facilities, bus stops, and streetlights gradually became a reality. Another victory came in 2000 with the opening of the José Bonifácio train station, connecting the district to the wider city via the CPTM’s Line 11-Coral. Today, Distrito José Bonifácio continues to evolve. One of the community’s ongoing efforts is the establishment of a dedicated subprefecture, a testament to their desire for greater local autonomy and recognition within São Paulo. Distrito José Bonifácio, from peach orchards to a vibrant urban district, offers a unique glimpse into the ever-changing tapestry of São Paulo.
