Hidden between two creeks lies Llandilo a tranquil suburb of Sydney. Llandilo’s story begins long before European settlement. The Mulgoa people called this land home. They hunted kangaroos and emus. They lived in bark huts called gunyahs. Their lives were governed by ancient Dreamtime laws.

Then came the Europeans. Samuel Terry received a large land grant in 1818. He named it Terry Brook. The name Llandilo appeared later. It’s named after a Welsh town Llandeilo. This reflects a connection to Wales. A connection possibly forged by settlers.

Llandilo remained largely rural. Small farms dotted the landscape. Many residents raised animals. Arabians were also common. Life in Llandilo remained relatively unchanged for over 200 years. The land remained primarily rural.

The area was eventually subdivided. Streets received numbers not names. Ninth Avenue became a feature. The last blocks were not sold until the 1930s depression. A school opened in 1866. Xavier College a Catholic school followed much later in 2008. The local school received a gift from Llandeilo Wales in 1928. A set of flags a symbol of lasting ties. In 1969 McGarrity’s Hill was officially named. It honored a family from the area.

Today Llandilo maintains its rural charm. It’s a small semi-rural town. It is surrounded by other suburbs. The Northern Road connects Llandilo to Sydney. The Great Western Highway and Richmond Road also provide links. Bus services are available. The median age is 35. The median weekly household income is $1382. The population is about 1600 people. The suburb has a rich history. A blend of Aboriginal heritage and Welsh influence. It’s a peaceful escape from the hustle of city life. Yet it’s just a short trip from the Sydney CBD. A hidden gem in the greater western Sydney region. Discover Llandilo. Discover its unique story.
