Across Yu Chau Street stands the Cumberland Presbyterian Church Kowloon a beacon of faith in the heart of Kowloon. This isn’t just any church. It’s a testament to a long and fascinating history. The story begins not here in Kowloon but far away in San Francisco’s Chinatown.
In 1894 the Cumberland Presbyterian Church’s mission began. Mrs Naomi Sutton a courageous missionary arrived. She started teaching English and caring for sick children. Her work laid the foundation for the church’s expansion into China. In 1900 a store became their first church building.
Reverend Gam Sing Quah a pivotal figure became the first Chinese pastor in 1904. He brought stability and many joined the church. Julia McCaslin a seminary graduate arrived in 1915 further strengthening the congregation. The church flourished. Generations were touched by dedicated pastors like Reverend Tom Jung who served for forty years.
In 1958 a new sanctuary was built. This signifies the growth and commitment of the community. The church also expanded its ministries with an educational building. Several devoted pastors including Reverend Ernest Chan and Reverend Lawrence Fung guided the congregation. They oversaw expansion and new campuses.
Reverend Walter Lau another impactful leader served for 34 years. He mentored youth and helped couples strengthen marriages. His leadership saw the church acquire a mission building. Today Reverend Alan Leung continues this legacy of faith and service.
