Shelly Park isn’t particularly shelly. Its name comes from the shells once abundant here. The park is part of the Cabbage Tree Bay Aquatic Reserve. This protects diverse marine life.
Let’s step back in time. The Gayamaygal people of the Eora nation were here first. They were the traditional custodians. Later, Shelly Park became a haven for boat owners. It provided protection from winds.
Shelly Park has changed over the years. In the 1920s, few buildings dotted the hillside. Now, expensive homes provide stunning views. But Shelly Park still offers a serene escape.
This park is one of the few west-facing ocean beaches on Australia’s east coast. Imagine the sunsets here. They paint the sky in pink and orange hues. These unique views are rare.
Since 2002, Cabbage Tree Bay has been a no-take aquatic reserve. This helps preserve marine life. Snorkelers and divers love Shelly Park. The visibility is good. A large variety of marine life can be seen. The maximum depth is about 12 metres. Many areas are shallow, ranging from 2 to 6 metres.
Look for the old motorbike on the seabed. It stands in about 8 metres of water.
Shelly Park is family-friendly. There is a playground for children. Lifeguards patrol the beach. Free electric barbecues are available. There are showers and toilets too.
The Boathouse Shelly Beach is a restaurant here. A bush track circles the headland. It provides views of the Northern Beaches.
The weekend of June 4 and 5 in 2016 was brutal. A severe storm damaged the walkway between Manly Beach and Shelly Park. Concrete slabs lifted and shifted. A small toilet block disappeared. An iconic sculpture at Fairy Bower pool suffered damage. Sections of the safety railing were destroyed.
