Punk rock spirit meets cozy cafe culture. That is Kafé 44. This place is more than just a spot for coffee. It is a cultural hub with a rich history.
Kafé 44 is located on Tjärhovsgatan 46 in Södermalm. Locals often call it 44:an. It is a cultural association running a cafe and concert venue. It also has a bookshop in Kapsylen.
Kafé 44 is a well-known meeting place. It attracts people from anarchist and syndicalist movements. Antifascists and other groups gather here. It is also popular with punks and antifascist skinheads. Kafé 44 is similar to Ungdomshuset in Copenhagen. Both are havens for left-wing youth. The building is owned by the Kapsylen association. Members include groups active in the building and residents.
Kafé 44 operates with three groups of volunteers. They manage the main parts of the operation. These are Infobokhandeln the bookstore, Dagfiket the daytime cafe and Scen 44 the stage.
Let’s talk about the Infobokhandeln. This is a libertarian socialist bookstore. You can find books on feminism history and philosophy here. They also offer antifascist and anarchist literature. Syndicalist books newspapers buttons music and films are available.
Then there is Dagfiket. The daytime cafe is run by its own dedicated group. Tompa Eken was a key figure. He baked buns for every gig until he retired in 2018.
Scen 44 is an open stage. Alternative music genres like punk and hardcore thrive here. There is usually no age restriction. Gigs have been arranged since 1990. Many bands both famous and unknown have played here. City Candy set the audience record on March 26 2019. They played with four other youth bands.
Many famous bands have played at Kafé 44. Asta Kask At the Gates and Backyard Babies are among them. Bob hund Slowlife and Charta 77 have also performed. Charta 77 typically holds its annual Christmas gig here on December 22. Coca Carola recorded a live album at Kafé 44. It is titled En Sista Gång På 44:an. De Lyckliga Kompisarna also recorded a live album here. Dismember Entombed and Florence Valentin are other notable acts. The Hellacopters Ison & Fille and Johnossi have graced the stage. Joakim Thåström Kent and Kristian Anttila have played here too.
