How about a story of resilience by the Nam Chung River? The Nam Chung River is more than just a waterway. It is a testament to Hong Kong’s enduring spirit.

Nam Chung is located in the North District of Hong Kong. It sits west of Luk Keng. This area marks the end of the Wilson Trail. It is also the starting point for the Nam Chung Country Trail.

The Nam Chung River itself is formed by two main streams. These are the Ping Nam Stream and the Ping Ka Stream. They merge in the lower course of the river.

In the past, indigenous villages thrived here. Villagers were mostly farmers cultivating the land. However, many villagers eventually moved to the city. The farmlands were left abandoned. Today, the area boasts large fishponds and reed beds. These are increasingly rare in the northeastern New Territories.

During the Japanese Occupation, Nam Chung played a role in the anti-Japanese resistance. In March 1943, the “Three-three incident” occurred. Several senior members of the East River Column were killed. Just months later, Nam Chung became the first village in the New Territories to establish an underground government. At that time, the village had over 200 households. Its population was around 1500.

Nam Chung is now a country park enclave. It faces ongoing threats from development. Fortunately, efforts are underway to revive agriculture. In 2013, the Partnership for Eco-Agriculture and Conservation of Earth was founded. Its goal is to develop sustainable farming. It also aims to conserve the natural environment and traditional culture.

Nam Chung Village includes several smaller settlements. There is Nam Chung Yeung Uk, Nam Chung Cheng Uk and Nam Chung Law Uk. Nam Chung Cheung Uk and Nam Chung Lei Uk also exist. Each has its own story.

Nam Chung’s ecosystem is also worth noting. The small island of A Chau is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. It lies just off the coast, in the southwestern part of Starling Inlet.

Consider the journey of Nam Chung River. It reflects the changing face of Hong Kong. From agricultural heartland to a site of resistance. Nam Chung now stands as a beacon for sustainable living. This river’s story reminds us of the importance of preserving our natural and cultural heritage.
