It began shortly before the Civil War. Free Black Americans established Norbeck as a settlement. This area became a southwestern outpost of Sandy Spring.
After emancipation Norbeck grew rapidly. The largest concentration of people lived in Mt Pleasant. This area included a church school and meeting hall. A store owned by white people was there too. White families also settled in Norbeck. Unlike other crossroads settlements Norbeck developed more slowly. It wasn’t until the 1880s that a store and post office opened. A blacksmith didn’t arrive until a decade later.
By 1900 Norbeck had a thriving commercial center. A.E Stonestreet ran a large store and the post office. Walter H. White owned the blacksmith shop. The Norbeck Citizens Association formed in the 1970s. It was established by the African American community that lived along Norbeck Road. In 2002 the association described Norbeck as an area of small streets with a rural feel. The roads were built long before Washington’s suburbs expanded.
Norbeck has woods and many mature trees. There is no commercial development there. It’s near Rockville Pike and the District of Columbia. Norbeck sits on the edge of the Washington suburbs. This location means there is pressure for Norbeck to change. Camille Cosby a television producer and philanthropist was born in Norbeck. The Norbeck Intrusive Suite an Ordovician granitic pluton forms the bedrock of this area.
