Kap Man Hang

Slipping and splashing, we begin our adventure at Kap Man Hang. This stream, also known as Sheung Luk Stream or Double Deer, is a Saikung favorite. Kap Man Hang offers inviting waterfalls and cool pools. Over the years, the lower pools have become quite popular, especially on warm, sunny weekends. But don’t let that deter you. The real magic of Kap Man Hang lies further upstream. The stream holds a captivating path, with stunning waterfalls, especially after a good rain. The journey begins near Sai Wan Road, perhaps at the pavilion there. You might take the 29R minibus from Saikung or a taxi. A longer approach starts at the High Island Reservoir’s East Dam. This route takes you past Long Ke, one of Hong Kong’s most picturesque beaches, and offers views of Tai Long Wan (Big Wave Bay). Eventually, you’ll connect with the Sai Wan path, descending to the village with its shops and restaurants. Kap Man Hang begins just past the bridge, where the concrete path gives way to rocks and water. The initial pools might be bustling. However, the crowds thin as you venture upstream. Kap Man Hang then reveals its quieter side, a tranquil stream hike. You’ll encounter “walls” of rock to climb, starting with one that looks daunting but is surprisingly easy. Past the dam is a good rest spot, with an exit route back to Sai Wan Road. Or you could head north towards Chek Keng or Ham Tin beach. Continuing up Kap Man Hang brings you to more waterfalls and refreshing pools. There’s a second “wall,” less imposing in appearance, but a bit trickier to navigate. Don’t forget to look back downstream. The view is breathtaking. The most challenging section involves some mild bouldering, manageable for experienced hikers, but potentially tricky for beginners. A rope might be helpful for those less confident. This leads to Reindeer Pool, another popular spot. An even more demanding climb takes you to the tallest, near-vertical falls, followed by the last major cascade. Near here is another exit point. For the truly adventurous, Kap Man Hang continues, though the terrain becomes steeper, the vegetation denser, and the waterfalls smaller. Eventually, the stream fades, and you’ll bushwalk your way back to the main trails. Kap Man Hang is more than just a stream. It’s an experience. It’s a journey through nature’s beauty, a test of agility, and a reward of tranquility.
