Stensättra fornborg is one of Huddinge’s best-preserved Iron Age fortifications. Imagine the lives lived here two millennia ago. This impressive structure measuring 160 by 130 meters sits atop a flat plateau. It offers breathtaking views of Lake Orlången and Flemingsbergsviken. The location wasn’t chosen randomly. The strategic position provided excellent views over the waterways. This allowed the inhabitants to monitor the movement of ships and control the ancient path through the valley.
The name Stensättra meaning fortified place is recorded as early as 1460. The fort’s natural defenses are striking. Sheer cliffs protect the east south and west sides. The north side however boasts impressive double walls. These are constructed of dry-laid stones some as large as 30-40 centimeters. The inner wall is 4-6 meters wide and 0.7-1.5 meters high. A clearly marked entrance is visible near a large boulder. A hollow space beneath the boulder may have been a guard post.
The walls are thought to be approximately 130 meters long. There was likely a palisade atop the walls for extra protection. Below the fort remnants of Stensättra’s old village site are visible.
