Ever wonder how a tire company became a patron of the arts? Here at the Bridgestone Museum, later renamed Artizon Museum, that unlikely story unfolds. The museum, nestled in Tokyo, owes its existence to Shojiro Ishibashi, the very founder of Bridgestone Tire Co. His passion for art blossomed into this museum in 1952, right in the Bridgestone Corporation headquarters. Originally called the Bridgestone Museum of Art, it housed Ishibashi’s personal collection, a surprising mix of Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, and 20th-century works. Think Monet’s “Water-Lilies” alongside Cézanne’s landscapes, a testament to Ishibashi’s eclectic taste. He also had a keen eye for Japanese artists like Fujishima Takeji, whose “Black Fan” became a highlight of the collection. The Bridgestone Museum wasn’t just about paintings. It also held ancient Greek ceramics, adding another layer to this unique collection. In 2015, the museum temporarily closed its doors to prepare for a grand reopening. The old building made way for the modern Museum Tower Kyobashi. The Bridgestone Museum was reborn in 2020 as the Artizon Museum, a name combining “art” and “horizon.” The Artizon Museum, still in Kyobashi, expanded its collection and now boasts even more impressive works. While the name changed, the spirit of Shojiro Ishibashi’s original vision lives on. From tire tycoon to art aficionado, Ishibashi’s legacy continues to enrich Tokyo’s cultural landscape. The Artizon Museum stands as a testament to his passion, a place where art transcends boundaries and inspires across generations.
