Imagine a formerly industrial area transformed. In the 1990s a new neighborhood rose. It provided homes for approximately 5000 residents and 12000 jobs. Schulhaus Im Birch became its educational heart. The school complex is huge by Swiss standards.
This impressive structure houses three departments. There is a primary school with five kindergartens and thirteen classes. A secondary school boasts fourteen classes. A large daycare system includes five afternoon programs a secondary-level program two morning programs and recreational courses. This ensures a comprehensive educational experience for the students.
The Schulhaus Im Birch is more than classrooms. The Bircholino cafeteria serves secondary students during breaks. It transforms into a midday program during lunch. Students can eat here spontaneously. Monthly bills cover these casual meals.
The complex also features a branch of the Glatt Valley music conservatory. The sports halls are managed by Zurich’s sports office. So this building is a real community hub.
The building’s design is striking. It comprises two cubic sections. The southern section houses the kindergarten secondary school and team sports. The northern part holds the primary school cafeteria music hall and library. A triple gymnasium is also connected.
The four-story building has varied floor heights. Classrooms are grouped in clusters. Each cluster includes two to four classrooms. There are one to two group rooms and a common anteroom. These form independent learning areas. They are effectively mini-schools within the larger complex.
The building’s facade is notable. Regularly spaced concrete pilasters are a defining feature. They unify the entire structure. This includes the gymnasium creating a visually coherent design. It’s a thoughtful detail reflecting the school’s integrated design philosophy.
