Area Science Park first opened its doors in 1982. Its mission was clear to bridge the gap. It connected the business world and Trieste’s many international scientific institutions. Today, it continues that vital role.
The park has two neighboring campuses. They sit near the highway linking Trieste to Austria and Slovenia. These campuses host a vibrant community. There are researchers, managers and companies here.
Area Science Park oversees a science and technology park. It offers over 80000 square meters for research and development. This space is spread across the two campuses. Sixty-five companies operate here including national and international research institutions. Together, they employ over 2700 people.
Area Science Park isn’t just about providing space. It also supports new businesses. Through its certified incubator called Innovation Factory, it guides startups. They offer pre-incubation, incubation and acceleration programs. This helps innovative startups to grow.
For over 20 years, Area Science Park has been developing projects. These projects promote innovation and high-tech research. They focus on technology transfer. They also help in using the results of scientific research. Area Science Park partners with IP4FVG. IP4FVG is the digital innovation hub of Friuli Venezia Giulia.
The park provides important infrastructure. This includes the Elettra Sincrotrone light machine. They also have a genomic sequencer. The sequencer helps in detailed analysis of DNA, RNA and epigenomics studies.
The ARGO System is another key initiative. It is based on process innovation. It encourages interaction between research and industry. Area Science Park coordinates ARGO. This makes Friuli Venezia Giulia a hub for innovation. The ARGO model has been tested in the region. Now it is being introduced nationally and internationally.
Area Science Park offers various services. These support business development. They include computing, legal advice and marketing support. They also provide information on EU programs. Area Science Park has 23000 square meters of laboratory space. It is available for rent. This space comes with specialized equipment. There are also offices and service facilities. These include a conference center and teaching labs. About 1500 square meters are available for new activities.
Today, Area Science Park hosts 89 companies and research centers. These include Elettra-Sincrotrone Trieste and ICGEB. Around 2400 researchers and managers work within its three campuses. It has evaluated over 1500 entrepreneurial ideas. It has supported 195 entrepreneurial paths. It has launched 45 startups.
Area Science Park manages many projects. It has managed projects worth over 10 million euros. It has involved 315 companies in technology transfer. It has created over 100 jobs for young people. This is thanks to training grants funded in the Park.
Area Science Park has 34 synchrotron light lines. Each year, over 1000 researchers use the synchrotron light. They come from over 50 countries.
