Dating back 400 million years, the rocks beneath your feet at Bluff Head whisper tales of ancient seas and shifting continents. Bluff Head formerly known as Cape of the Yellow Bamboo Point is a remote cape in northeastern New Territories. This isn’t just any ordinary landscape. It’s a journey back in time to Hong Kong’s oldest sedimentary rock region.

Here at Bluff Head, you’re standing on Devonian sandstones. These siltstones and conglomerates were formed from fluvial channel deposits. Imagine vast rivers carving their way through the land. They deposited layers upon layers of sediment.

These layers eventually hardened into the rocks you see today. The unique coastal sedimentary rock formations tell a story of geological history. They showcase strongly folded and faulted strata.

Bluff Head is now part of the Hong Kong National Geopark. It holds some of the oldest rocks in Hong Kong. This area is special, a testament to the Earth’s ever-changing face.

One of the most iconic sights at Bluff Head is the Devil’s Fist. This distinctive sandstone formation resembles a fist punching skyward. Four hundred million years of weathering and coastal erosion have sculpted this fragile rock. The Devil’s Fist stands as a symbol of nature’s power.

Notice the vertical fingers of sedimentary rock. They are here at Bluff Head because of tectonic processes. These processes tilted the 400-million-year-old sedimentary rock.

Another geological wonder at Bluff Head is Bacon Rock. Look closely at the reddish sandstone. Its layers resemble strips of bacon. Varying oxidation levels in the sedimentary rock created these distinctive color bands.

The Bluff Head Sea Cave is a must-see. Carved over millennia by relentless waves, it reveals the area’s 400-million-year geological history. Rugged rock walls create a captivating passage.

You can access the Sea Cave during high and low tide. It is a popular spot for exploration and photography. Some people also access it by canoeing.

There is another hidden gem near Devil’s Fist. It is a small sea cave offering a unique perspective of this iconic rock formation. The cave frames the Devil’s Fist. It creates an exceptional photography spot. This location provides a dramatic view of the fingers of the Devil’s Fist, set against the cave’s rugged interior. The semi-circle cove is surrounded by Devonian red rocks.

To fully appreciate the Devil’s Fist, visit during low tide. The entire formation, including the wrist, becomes visible. At high tide, the lower part of the formation may be submerged. The upper fingers of the fist can still be seen creating a different, yet still impressive, view.

This area is remote. It is accessible by boat or a challenging 12-hour hike. Its remoteness adds to its allure.

As you explore Bluff Head, remember that you’re walking through time. The rocks beneath your feet are witnesses to Hong Kong’s ancient past. The Devil’s Fist and Bacon Rock are testaments to the power of nature. The Bluff Head Sea Cave offer glimpses into the Earth’s geological history. Take a moment to appreciate the beauty and wonder of this unique place. Let the stories of Bluff Head stay with you long after you leave.
