Behold the Steel Knight Statue a majestic bronze figure astride his horse. This isn’t just any statue. It’s a monument to Kusunoki Masashige a legendary warrior. The statue took an incredible ten years to create. Imagine the dedication!

The Steel Knight Statue stands proudly near Nijubashi Bridge. It depicts Masashige in a moment of controlled power. He’s subtly pulling on his horse’s reins. He’s welcoming Emperor Go-Daigo. This was after the Emperor’s return from exile in 1333.

The creation of this masterpiece was a monumental undertaking. The statue is more than four meters tall. It includes intricate details. A traditional casting technique wouldn’t work. Assistant Professor Sessei Okazaki traveled to the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. He learned new casting techniques there. He even discovered that many large statues were not cast in one piece. They were cast section by section.

Okazaki returned to Japan. He spent a year casting the horse in seven sections. The body the neck four legs and the tail. He combined new techniques with traditional Japanese metalworking. The chasing and patination took another two years. Finally in 1896 the Steel Knight Statue was finished. It wasn’t erected until 1900.

The project was a commemorative effort for the 200th anniversary of the Besshi Copper Mine. Copper from the mine was used. Several artists collaborated. Takamura Koun worked on the head. Yamada Kisai and Ishikawa Komei crafted the body and armor. Goto Sadayuki sculpted the horse. They had to overcome a unique challenge. There were many portraits of Masashige. But they all differed significantly. There was no single definitive image. The artists focused on capturing Masashige’s expression. They aimed for the look of an excellent tactician.

Kawasaki Chitora meticulously researched Masashige’s armor. He studied temples shrines and relics. Goto Teiko even dissected a horse to perfectly recreate its anatomy. He went to Tohoku. He photographed many horses. He created models. He ensured accurate detail.

The Steel Knight Statue is a testament to skill perseverance and artistry. It’s more than a statue. It’s a story etched in bronze a legacy of a warrior and the artists who immortalized him. Take a moment to appreciate its grandeur its detail and its powerful story.
