The devotion to Our Lady of Navigators is centuries old. It’s deeply rooted in the hearts of this community. This is the Paróquia Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes. We stand before its very walls. Let’s explore its remarkable history.

The Paróquia Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes wasn’t always this grand structure. The area was originally home to Carijós indigenous people. João Dias de Arzão a Portuguese explorer arrived in 1658. Fertile land and abundant resources attracted more settlers. By 1850 a small settlement existed where Navegantes now stands. Families prayed in their homes. They held novenas and processions. They honored Santo Amaro and São Sebastião.

In 1895 the desire for a chapel grew. Maria Rita a devoted woman convinced her husband to donate land. The land was near the main landing. Permission was granted in 1896 by the Bishop of Curitiba. The chapel was dedicated to Our Lady of Navigators São Sebastião and Santo Amaro. The first two saints were local favorites. Our Lady of Navigators would protect sailors and fishermen the town’s lifeblood.

A beautiful statue arrived by boat in 1897. Fisherman Manoel Galego brought it. The townspeople celebrated. This annual celebration continues to this day. Construction began in 1897. The chapel opened on February 2 1898. Priests from Itajaí visited for special services. Life was simpler then. There were no banks paved roads doctors or television.

The current church began in 1959. The cornerstone was blessed on November 8. The Paróquia Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes officially opened on August 26 1962. Bishop Joaquim Domingues de Oliveira created the parish. Navegantes became a municipality.

In 1996 the church became a sanctuary. Father Alvino Broering spearheaded the effort. This was the centennial of the statue’s arrival. He became the first rector. Many priests served the parish. Eduardo Batos is the current pastor and rector.

The devotion to Our Lady of Navigators has ancient roots. It dates back to the Crusades. Portuguese and Spanish sailors crossed the Mediterranean. They sought to protect sacred sites. Mary became known as the Star of the Sea. She guided sailors to safety. Prayers were offered before voyages. These prayers brought courage to face the sea’s dangers. The devotion came to Brazil with the first colonists. Fishermen prayed to Our Lady of Navigators for protection and sustenance. This devotion is reflected in numerous churches along Brazil’s coast. The Paróquia Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes stands as a testament to faith hope and the enduring power of prayer.
