Right here, in the heart of Vienna’s 8th district, this intimate theatre has been a cornerstone of Austrian cabaret since 1983, bearing a name that resonates with its unique spirit. It all started when Nadja Niedermair, a young woman driven by a vision of a vibrant space for both seasoned performers and rising stars, bought a small, unassuming Biedermeier house in Lenaugasse. She transformed this space into a cozy haven of laughter and satirical brilliance. It didn’t look like much back then: the audience sat on Ikea chairs and the stage was, quite literally, on the other side of just eight square meters. Yet, this cramped space became a springboard for some of Austria’s most beloved comedians.
Josef Hader, Thomas Maurer, Martin Puntigam – icons of Austrian humour, all launched their careers here, embracing the intimate atmosphere of the Niedermair. It was a place where raw talent could be nurtured, a place where bold ideas could bloom. Since Nadja Niedermair stepped aside in 1991, the Kabarett has welcomed new leadership, but it’s stayed true to its core values. I Stangl, Doris Ringseis, and finally Andreas Fuderer, the current director, have held the reigns, each adding their own unique touch to the Niedermair’s legacy. Over the years, the space has undergone renovations, evolving from Ikea to comfortable, fixed seating. It’s a world away from the cramped beginnings, yet the essence of the Niedermair – the warmth, the sense of community, the unbridled laughter – remains unchanged.
