A solemn tribute to Polish courage. That’s what the Pomnik Biało-Czerwonej Iskry Aircraft embodies here in Otwock. This monument, a faithful replica of the TS-11 Iskra aircraft, stands as a stark reminder of a tragic day in Polish history. On November 11, 1998, the original Iskra crashed in this very city. It was a day of national celebration, the 80th anniversary of Poland’s independence. Two skilled pilots, Major Tomasz Pajorek and Major Mariusz Oliwa, were on a mission. They were tasked with assessing the weather conditions before an air parade over Warsaw. The weather that day was treacherous. Dense clouds, low visibility, and severe icing plagued the skies. Sadly, these conditions proved too much for the pilots. Despite their experience, they lost spatial orientation and crashed into the forest near Soplicowo. The Pomnik Biało-Czerwonej Iskry Aircraft serves as a testament to their sacrifice and the enduring spirit of Polish aviation.
