“Did anyone bring their wellies?” a child’s voice chirped as our group approached the entrance to Seton Nossiter Park. Seton Nossiter Park, a 30-hectare slice of wild Wellington, sprawls between the urban edges of Grenada Village and Newlands. This isn’t just any park. It’s a journey through time, where remnants of a bygone era hide amongst regenerating bush and the rushing waters of Belmont Stream. Imagine, in 1885, this peaceful valley echoed with the sounds of construction as New Zealand’s largest timber viaduct took shape. Two of the concrete abutments, silent witnesses to this feat of engineering, still stand near the Mark Avenue entrance. Follow the path deeper into the park, where Belmont Stream, a tributary of the Porirua Stream, carves its way through the valley. Halfway up, the air fills with the joyful barks of dogs enjoying their designated off-lead area, a haven for our furry friends amidst native trees like titoki and tawa. Venture further still, and you’ll find a peaceful picnic area. Here, surrounded by nature, you can almost hear the echoes of Seton Nossiter himself, a dedicated local farmer and councillor who tirelessly served the community. He was known for his dedication to education, often welcoming schoolchildren to his dairy farm, which operated until he was 70 years old. It’s only fitting that this park, a place he cherished, now bears his name. As you leave Seton Nossiter Park and re-enter the bustling city, carry with you the memory of its tranquil beauty and the legacy of a man who dedicated his life to serving his community.
