Imagine waking up to the gentle sounds of nature at Burke Lake Park Campground. The sun filters through the trees. It promises a day of adventure.

Burke Lake Park Campground offers a unique experience. It’s a place where history and recreation intertwine. This park wasn’t always intended to be a recreational haven.

Back in the 1950s the federal government had different plans. They considered this land for a large international airport. Can you imagine Dulles Airport here instead of a tranquil park?

Fortunately the airport plans changed. Fairfax County purchased the land. In 1963 Burke Lake Park opened its gates. It quickly became a beloved jewel of the county.

Today Burke Lake Park Campground is part of a larger park. It has almost 900 acres. Fairfax County residents can access it for free. Non-residents pay a small parking fee. This helps maintain the park.

The campground itself offers various options. There are family camping sites limited to six people. Each site can have no more than two tents. Flexible group camping sites can host up to 18 people. These sites feature a central fire pit. Multiple sites can be combined for larger groups.

For the truly adventurous, there is wilderness camping. This primitive camping area is located in the eastern part of the park. It is bordered by the Fairfax County Parkway. Wilderness camping costs only five dollars per person. A minimum of seven campers is required.

Keep in mind some important rules. Fairfax County Park Authority does not allow outside firewood. This is to prevent the spread of invasive insects and diseases. Firewood can be purchased at the campground. Campfires are prohibited between midnight and 4 p.m. from February 1 through April 30.

While at Burke Lake Park Campground be sure to explore the rest of the park. The centerpiece is the 218-acre Burke Lake. It is known for its phenomenal largemouth bass population. Rent a rowboat at the marina. Launch your own boat. Just remember gasoline-powered motors are prohibited.

Walk or bike the 4.68-mile unpaved trail around the lake. Play a round of miniature golf. Ride the miniature train or carousel. Visit the ice cream parlor. Enjoy a picnic. Burke Lake Park has something for everyone.

Burke Lake Park Campground is more than just a place to pitch a tent. It is a place to connect with nature. It is a place to appreciate the history of the area. It is a place to create lasting memories. As the stars emerge overhead remember the story of this land. It almost became an airport. Now it’s a park where you can relax and enjoy the great outdoors.
