Amidst the serene landscape near Tumba, lies Lilla Dalens begravningsplats. This cemetery, inaugurated in 1989, offers a unique final resting place. Lilla Dalens begravningsplats is one of Sweden’s few religiously neutral burial grounds. It welcomes individuals of all faiths and cultures. The cemetery’s name, Lilla Dalens begravningsplats, originates from a small cottage, “Lilla Dalen”. This cottage was built in the 19th century under the Elvesta farm. There was once also “Stora Dalen”, which no longer exists. The current Lilla Dalen cottage dates back to the early 20th century, owned by Botkyrka municipality. It is now managed by the Vårby-Fittja heritage association.
Lilla Dalens begravningsplats sprawls across 58 hectares. It can accommodate approximately 2,270 burial plots. The landscape architects W. Bauer and J. Karon designed the layout. The cemetery includes a minneslund, a dedicated area for scattering ashes. A reflecting pool sits next to a modest ceremonial building. This building has yellow brick facades and a copper roof. BLP Arkitekter designed the building and adjacent bell tower.
The ceremonial building at Lilla Dalens begravningsplats embodies Botkyrka’s multicultural and multi-faith community. It serves individuals of diverse religious backgrounds. After renovations in 2008-2009, the building’s seating capacity increased to 70. Artist Karin Bernerstedt’s stained-glass window was also added. This window portrays a tree representing “Time and Eternity”. It adds a touch of artistic beauty to the space. Lilla Dalens begravningsplats stands as a testament to inclusivity. It offers a peaceful sanctuary amidst nature’s embrace.
