Established in 1892 Rising Sun Baptist Church stands before you. Its history is woven into the very fabric of this neighborhood. It began humbly in the home of L W Bratton. This wasn’t some grand hall but a simple dwelling north of the present church. The first meetings were held there. Later they moved to local schoolhouses.
Imagine the dedication of those early members. They gathered on the first Sunday of each month. Money was scarce but their faith was strong. They raised funds brick by brick for their own building. Will Beaver Miss Edith Hume Miss Sallie Rodgers and many others were among those charter members. Their names echo through the years a testament to their unwavering commitment.
Mr Mike Murray a man who wasn’t even a church member donated the land. His brother Henry Murray was a deacon at Rising Sun. A condition of the gift was that no cemetery would ever be built on the grounds. This speaks volumes about the community’s desire for a sacred space focused solely on worship.
The church building completed in August 1892 was a simple structure. One large room with four windows on each of the north and south walls. A round stained-glass window above the east-side entrance is a survivor still shining in the new sanctuary. A trap door led to the baptistery under the pulpit. Coal stoves kept the congregation warm.
By 1898 they had installed an organ and purchased hymnals. A Sunday School was started though it didn’t run continuously. Collections were taken after services to cover expenses. For several years they were part of the Boone County Baptist Association then later affiliated with Callaway Baptist Association.
Rising Sun Baptist Church wasn’t just a place of worship. It was a hub for the community. Revivals lasted for weeks. Guest preachers came from far and wide. These weren’t just religious events. They were social gatherings celebrations of faith and fellowship.
Through its long history Rising Sun has faced challenges. The original church building was torn down in 1998 to make way for the current structure. Yet the spirit of the church endures. Its commitment to community and faith remains as strong as ever. Rising Sun stands not only as a place of worship but a beacon of hope. A testament to the enduring power of faith in the face of change.
