Governor Simon van der Stel received a vast estate. He named it Groot Constantia. Years later in 1716 the estate was divided. Bergvliet became its own distinct farmland. Bergvliet’s story unfolds through changing hands. Petrus Eksteen owned the land. Later William Hertzog purchased the estate. His sisters inherited it upon his death. Dr Purcell managed the estate. He even surveyed Bergvliet’s unique flora. Reverend Jeffcoat then took over the stewardship. In 1930 the farm was split again. The Purcell family got Kreupelbosch. The Jeffcoats kept Bergvliet. This marked the end of Bergvliet’s rural history.
In 1945 Bergvliet changed dramatically. The Cape Division Council bought the land. They created a housing estate for ex-servicemen fulfilling Reverend Jeffcoat’s wish. Many parts of the farm were sold. Subdivision continues to this day. In 1989 Bergvliet Manor House gained national monument status. It became a Provincial Heritage Site in 2011. Bergvliet is more than just houses and streets. It’s a community. Sweet Valley Primary School and Bergvliet High School stand as pillars of the community. They offer quality education to local children.
