Hidden in plain sight, at the corner of Pacific Highway and Livingstone Avenue, stands Pymble Uniting Church. This seemingly unassuming church, formerly known as Pymble Presbyterian Church, holds a captivating story within its sandstone walls. Pymble Uniting Church isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a testament to evolving musical tastes and a community’s dedication to preserving its sonic heritage. The story begins in 1967 with the installation of a Hill, Norman & Beard organ. This “unit” organ, boasting three extended ranks and a separate mixture, embodied the “Neo-Baroque” style popular at the time. The organ’s initial design even included space for a future Krumhorn stop, a testament to the church’s forward-thinking vision. Fast forward about two decades. Pymble Uniting Church underwent a significant transformation. The sanctuary, along with its cherished organ, was relocated to the southern end. This change ushered in a new era for the church and its musical instrument. In 1995, organ specialists Kelvin Hastie and Stuart Garside, alongside the church’s Director of Music, Heather Tredinnick, recognized the need for enhancements. The Mixture’s composition was deemed too high. The Spitz Principal, a key chorus rank, sounded too flute-like in its higher register. Funds were available, and the church opted to forgo the planned Krumhorn in favor of a more versatile reed stop. A three-stage improvement process commenced. The Mixture was lowered by an octave through clever rewiring in Stage I. Stage II saw the Spitz Principal undergo revoicing in Melbourne, resulting in a richer, more traditional principal tone. The organ’s wind pressure was also increased, giving it greater power. Finally, in Stage III, a small-scaled Trumpet rank, crafted by Australian Pipe Organs, was added. Pymble Uniting Church, with its meticulously refined organ, stands as a symbol of adaptation and a community’s unwavering commitment to its musical legacy. The organ’s journey reflects not only the evolution of musical preferences but also the dedication of those who sought to enhance its beauty and versatility.
