The cornerstone of Hope Lutheran Church was laid in 1956. This wasn’t just any church. It was a beacon of hope itself. A testament to faith established in a time of global uncertainty. Hope Lutheran Church and Student Center opened its doors in 1957. It was built to serve the University of Maryland community and the broader Washington DC area.
Hope’s story began even earlier. The idea for a ministry specifically for students was first discussed in the 1940s. A survey was conducted to assess the need. The first service was held in 1952 at the University of Maryland Armory. Sixty-nine people became charter members. This small group laid the foundation for what would become a vibrant community.
The name Hope was chosen for a reason. It reflected the optimism of the post-war era. Plans for the first meeting of the World Council of Churches were underway. The theme was “Jesus Christ the Hope of the World”. This perfectly captured the spirit of the new church. The original sanctuary doors featured a cross a ship and compass points. These symbolized the global reach of the church’s mission. Hope’s commitment to inclusion is long-standing. In 1989 they became a Reconciling in Christ congregation. This explicitly welcomed people of all sexual orientations and gender identities.
Hope has had its share of changes. Several pastors have served over the years. Notable is Rev Dr Elizabeth Platz. She was the first Lutheran woman ordained in North America. She served at Hope and the University of Maryland for many years. The church has adapted and evolved. In 2015 it entered into a collaborative ministry with Lutheran Campus Ministry. They continue to support students and the community. Hope maintains a deep connection to the University of Maryland.
The church has celebrated many milestones. The mortgage was paid off in 1989. A major renovation in 2008 added a narthex an elevator and improved accessibility. The beautiful stained-glass windows are a highlight. Every other window is reversed to let in more natural light. Hope’s community involvement extends beyond its walls. They’ve organized a movie series supported new mothers and even held an Advent petting zoo. The church continues to serve as a place of worship. It also a place of community fellowship and outreach. Hope stands as a testament to faith community and the enduring hope of the Gospel.
