“Tranquility” is the word that comes to mind as we approach Nam Tam Wan. It’s a world away from the city’s constant activity. Nam Tam Wan is a hidden gem on Cheung Chau Island. This island lies just 10 kilometers southwest of Hong Kong Island.
Nam Tam Wan is on the eastern side of Cheung Chau’s South Island. It’s a retreat for those seeking peace. The Alliance Bible Seminary is nearby. Many people come here to escape the daily grind.
Nam Tam Wan may be small but it has unique beauty. Strange rocks line the coast. The sea view is truly captivating. Many people enjoy sunbathing here. There is a small beach in Nam Tam Wan.
Next to the beach stands a Tin Hau Temple. This temple honors Tin Hau, the Chinese sea goddess. She is believed to protect fishermen and sailors. A small square sits in front of the temple.
Getting here is an adventure. From the Cheung Chau Ferry Terminal, we pass Peak Road. We also go by the Kwan Kung Pavilion and The Alliance Bible Seminary. The walk to Nam Tam Wan takes about half an hour.
Cheung Chau itself is a fascinating place. It seems small on the map. But like a Doctor Who’s Tardis, it holds much more than expected. Coastal trails, beaches, and rural valleys dot the island. Only one police car exists here adding to its unique charm.
Cheung Chau means “Long Island”. But its dumbbell shape is more accurate. A north-south spit connects two large granite formations. The island has a natural harbor that is now protected by breakwaters. It’s home to a major fishing community.
Arriving by ferry, you’ll see the typhoon shelter filled with fishing boats. The Praya is the main waterfront road. Pak Tei Temple is a short walk away. It honors Cheung Chau’s patron saint, Pak Tei.
A walk across the spit leads to Tung Wan Beach. It’s a popular spot for swimming. The water is cleaner than many Hong Kong beaches. A small headland hosts the Windsurfing Centre. You can rent windsurfers and sea kayaks here.
Past the center is Kwun Yam Beach. It’s smaller and often quieter. A shack-style beach bar sits above the tideline. It’s a perfect place to relax. Steps from Kwun Yam Wan lead to the Mini Great Wall. It winds along a rugged landscape. It is a path built of whitish rock.
