Standing here we are at the United States Capitol Police Headquarters. What if these walls could talk? The United States Capitol Police has a rich history dating back to 1828. Congress established the USCP to protect the Capitol. This was after incidents showed the need for better security.

Initially, the USCP’s jurisdiction was limited. It covered the Capitol and its grounds. This area was about 58 acres. It included congressional buildings and the Library of Congress. Over time, the USCP’s responsibilities grew.

Today the United States Capitol Police has jurisdiction throughout the U.S. when protecting members of Congress. It shares jurisdiction with the D.C. Metropolitan Police. This allows them to make arrests for crimes committed in the Capitol.

The United States Capitol Police is part of the legislative branch. It is accountable to Congress. This differs from other police departments. Those departments answer to the president. The USCP is overseen by committees in the House and Senate. Being part of the legislative branch means different rules. For example, the USCP is not subject to the Freedom of Information Act.

The USCP has roughly 2300 employees. This includes about 2000 officers and 300 civilians. Within the USCP are five bureaus. These bureaus manage all aspects of Capitol security. This includes preventing attacks and managing contingency plans. The Capitol Police Board governs the department. The board includes the sergeants at arms of the House and Senate. The Architect of the Capitol is also on the board. The police chief serves in a non-voting role.

Funding for the USCP has increased significantly. This reflects the growing need for security. This year, the USCP’s budget is about $515.5 million. This is a $51.2 million increase from last year. In 2000, the budget was about $115 million.

The United States Capitol Police protects the Congress. It protects members, employees, visitors, and facilities. The aim is to ensure Congress can fulfill its duties. This happens in a safe and open environment.

The USCP has faced challenges. The January 6th attack exposed vulnerabilities. There have also been allegations of racial discrimination within the force. The USCP is working to address these issues. They are enhancing training and promoting diversity.

The United States Capitol Police is committed to its mission. It strives for professionalism, security, and safety. The USCP protects the legislative process. It safeguards the symbol of American democracy. It serves the people who work here and the millions who visit.
