Encompassing over 500 hectares, Las Bemowo whispers tales of Warsaw’s past. Las Bemowo is more than just trees. It’s a living testament to the city’s resilience. Imagine a time when this vast woodland was a mere fragment of a sprawling ancient forest. This forest stretched northwest of Warsaw, nestled between the Vistula, Bzura, and Utrata rivers. The growth of settlements slowly chipped away at this wilderness. Pastures and wastelands replaced the trees, leaving Las Bemowo a shadow of its former self. The scars of history are etched into Las Bemowo. After the January Uprising, the Russian army seized the land. They built forts, forever changing the landscape. The remnants of old-growth pine trees in sections 4 and 5 stand as silent witnesses to those early reforestation efforts. Las Bemowo holds hidden depths. Extensive marshes and wetlands cover over a third of its area, approximately 214 hectares. These bogs, damp forests, and alder groves create a unique ecosystem. They also limit access to some parts of the forest, adding an air of mystery. Within the last thirty years, two nature reserves have emerged within Las Bemowo. These reserves safeguard the most precious natural features of the area. The Łosiowe Błota Reserve, established in 1980, protects the low peat bog communities characteristic of the Warsaw Basin. Rare and protected plants thrive here, in a landscape inaccessible to humans. The reserve is divided into two fragments, separated by about 500 meters. The second reserve, Kalinowa Łąka, established in 1989, preserves a spring meadow rich with the Guelder-rose. This small, 3.47-hectare reserve is a haven for the European globeflower and other rare plant species. Las Bemowo invites exploration. A 5-kilometer nature and educational trail winds through the forest. It showcases the diverse habitats and even touches a part of the Łosiowe Błota Reserve. The trail is marked with a unique symbol: the tracks of an elk. For younger adventurers, the “Find Zgubka” trail offers a different kind of adventure. Located near Sikorski Street behind the Military Cemetery, this 550-meter path teaches children aged 4 to 10 basic survival skills in case they get lost. Las Bemowo is a place of contrasts. It’s a place where history intertwines with nature, where whispers of the past mingle with the rustling of leaves.
